Department of Research

Mission

The Department of Research (DR) is tasked with planning and developing professional and academic research to create and publish scientific data regarding the crimes committed during the war in Kosovo, as well as addressing the needs of victims and the damages caused by these crimes. This department is committed to providing in-depth knowledge and contributing to scientific and social discussions

Responsibilities

  • Developing standard procedures for the use of ICCW materials in research;
  • Ensuring the preservation of data and materials during use;
  • Providing informative services through manual and electronic catalogs;
  • Planning and conducting field research, including evidence collection;
  • Publishing the testimonies of crime survivors;
  • Cooperating with scientific and academic institutions for research;
  • Organizing conferences to address various aspects of crimes;
  • Developing digital platforms to facilitate research and learning;
  • Analyzing and visualizing data to provide a clearer overview of events;
  • Digitizing archives for the preservation and access to materials.

Divisions

Division for User Services

Mission
The Division for User Services is dedicated to ensuring efficient access to and use of ICCW materials and data for research, while safeguarding information and promoting its use in accordance with legislation

Responsibilities

  • Creating procedures for access to and use of ICCW materials;
  • Protecting data and materials from loss or damage during use;
  • Ensuring that the use of materials complies with applicable legislation;
  • Providing informative services through manual and electronic catalogs;
  • Assisting users in finding information and utilizing technology;
  • Managing data collections for users;
  • Organizing campaigns to raise awareness about data and its potential use for research;
  • Fulfilling responsibilities to make data and materials available for research in compliance with legislation.

Division for Academic Research

Mission
The Division for Academic Research its mission is to conduct in-depth and professional research on crimes committed during the war, contributing to the recognition and documentation of these events and their consequences

Responsibilities

  • Creating programs for research on war crimes;
  • Preparing and approving questionnaires for field research;
  • Planning and conducting research, including:
    • Collecting testimonies (written, audio, video, etc.) and interviewing witnesses;
    • Analyzing historical, military, economic, and other aspects;
    • Assessing losses and damages caused by crimes;
    • Publishing the testimonies of survivors in accordance with legislation;
    • Developing procedures for researching sexual violence during the war.
  • Coordinating with academic institutions for research and publication of results;
  • Participating in scientific events to address war crimes;
  • Presenting research findings on crimes committed during the war;
  • Distributing materials through various platforms;
  • Creating and maintaining the physical and electronic library of ICCW;
  • Cooperating with media and organizations for research activities;
  • Visualizing and interpreting ICCW data;
  • Fulfilling responsibilities for academic research and publishing results.

Division for Research Materials Digitization

Mission
The Division for Research Materials Digitization is dedicated to modernizing and improving access to research materials through the digitization process, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of information regarding the crimes committed during the war

Responsibilities

  • Initiating and promoting cooperation between departments for the digitization of research materials;
  • Developing and implementing policies for the advanced use of digital archives, transforming physical documents and recordings into digital formats;
  • Digital Museum: Creating materials for the digital museum;
  • Designing advanced methods for searching and utilizing new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to assist in locating specific documents;
  • Developing video materials and using graphic tools to visualize information, including maps of crimes and connections between events;
  • Creating a structure that links documents and resources to facilitate the identification of individuals and events;
  • Designing educational platforms for students and researchers to explore war events;
  • Facilitating knowledge exchange among historians, legal experts, and other professionals through digital platforms;
  • Performing other necessary responsibilities for the digitization of data related to research on war crimes.

Division for Specialized Analysis

Mission
The Division for Specialized Analysis is committed to provide in-depth analyses and support to public institutions regarding the needs of victims of crimes committed during the war in Kosovo, helping to address psycho-social consequences and assess damages

Responsibilities

  • Planning and conducting specialized analyses for public institutions to address the needs of victims and measure war-related damages;
  • Cooperating with other institutions to develop and providing analyses on the needs of victims and the consequences of crimes;
  • Performing analyses and providing professional assistance to justice institutions regarding crimes and the damages incurred;
  • Carrying out tasks and other responsibilities related to providing analyses requested by institutions concerning victims and measuring economic, psycho-social, and emotional damages.

Information

The Research Department consists of four divisions: the Division for User Services, the Division for Academic Research, the Division for Research Materials Digitization, and the Division for Specialized Analysis. Each division contributes to the department’s mission through specialized approaches and methodologies.

The Director of the Research Department reports to the Executive Director of ICCW. The staff of this department is composed of twenty (20) professionals dedicated to ensuring the development of research and scientific publications that are crucial for recognizing history and improving conditions for victims.
