Documentation Department

Mission

The mission of the Department of Documentation (DD) is to collect, verify, process, and archive data for the documentation of crimes committed during the war in Kosovo. The goal of this department is to create a reliable information base that contributes to the understanding and addressing of the historical and social events that have occurred, providing a comprehensive perspective for victims and society

Accountability

  • Identifying and collecting important sources for documenting crimes from various perspectives (historical, military, etc.);
  • Collecting field resources and collecting materials related to losses and damages;
  • Cataloging and classifying materials and documentation;
  • Verifying the origin and authenticity of materials;
  • Physically and digitally processing documents related to war crimes;
  • Efficiently managing data and creating an archiving system;
  • Ensuring public access to the collected data in accordance with legislation;
  • Developing standard procedures for the administration of archival materials;
  • Preparing reports and statistical analyses on crimes.

Divisions

Division for Collection

Mission
The Division for Collection is tasked with collecting and documenting important sources related to crimes committed during the war in Kosovo, accessing these events from historical, military, legal, and social perspectives

Responsibilities

  • Collecting important sources for documenting war crimes from various perspectives, including historical, military, economic, and cultural;
  • Engaging in the collection of materials related to human losses, physical and psychological damages and impacts on cultural and environmental property;
  • Collecting data on committed crimes, victims and damages, including determining the location and time of the offenses, circumstances of the crimes and identifying victims and witnesses;
  • Donating, purchasing and loaning physical/digital copies for the ICCW and creating an archival collection;
  • Collecting, organizing and publishing the testimonies of survivors of war crimes;
  • Carrying out other responsibilities related to data collection for the documentation of crimes.

Division for Verification

Mission
The mission of the Division for Verification is to ensure the control and verification of information collected regarding crimes committed during the war in Kosovo, guaranteeing the authenticity and accuracy of the data

Responsibilities

  • Verifying the origin of materials documenting war crimes;
  • Ensuring the authenticity of materials to guarantee the reliability of the information;
  • Collecting, verifying, organizing and preserving data that document the circumstances of the crimes;
  • Comparing collected data and verifying its accuracy to ensure the integrity of the information;
  • Presenting the results of verifications conducted to support research and documentation processes;
  • Carrying out other responsibilities related to completing and verifying data on war crimes.

Division for Processing and Archiving

Mission
The mission of the Division for Processing and Archiving is to organize, process and archive information and materials related to crimes committed during the war in Kosovo, ensuring the efficient management of both physical and digital data

Responsibilities

  • Organizing, classifying, and cataloging materials in accordance with established standards;
  • Physically and digitally processing documentation related to the crimes committed;
  • Creating a sustainable process for data archiving;
  • Categorizing collected materials and data for better management;
  • Creating, managing, and maintaining records and data regarding crimes and damages incurred;
  • Preparing analyses and statistical data on crimes;
  • Providing access for victims and interested parties in accordance with legislation;
  • Implementing procedures for managing archival materials;
  • Collecting and classifying data to create a physical and digital archival collection;
  • Preserving materials under appropriate conditions, both in physical and digital archives;
  • Developing plans for the conservation and restoration of damaged documents;
  • Creating and implementing a plan for the digitization of archival materials;
  • Developing long-term policies for the preservation of materials;
  • Carrying out other responsibilities related to processing and archiving collected information.

Information

The Department of Documentation is an important organizational unit within the ICCW, consisting of three main divisions: the Division for Collection, the Division for Verification and the Division for Processing and Archiving. Each division plays a specific role in fulfilling the department’s mission, ensuring a coordinated and efficient approach to information management.

The Director of the Department of Documentation is responsible for reporting directly to the Executive Director of the ICCW, thereby ensuring a close and effective connection between management levels. With a staff of thirty (30) professionals, the Department of Documentation is committed to making a valuable contribution to the study and documentation of crimes committed during the war in Kosovo.
